A local beekeeper collected them and installed them in a hive, that they filled, in his garden Beekeeper collecting a swarm of bees. . When I passed the hive on a sunny day a few days later the bees were humming nicely, no doubt stocking up with nectar from abundant flowers at this time of year in our garden.

Annual 2025

In Llansadwrn it was the warmest year recorded at the station over 47 years. It was also the sunniest on Anglesey.

The annual mean temperature was 11.4C highest in station records since before 1979.

Rainfall totalled 1183.9 mm, least since 2022, the 31st largest in Llansadwrn records since 1929.

Graph of annual mean temperature and anomalies 1979-2025.

The annual mean temperature was 11.4C (+0.6) of the decadal average and [+1.2] of the 30-y 1991-2020 climatological average. The hottest in records kept since 1979. In Llansadwrn the statistically significant warming trend by regression analysis over 47 years was running at +1.4C. The calculated average mean in 1979 when records began was 9.5C and in 2025 it was 10.9C.

Graph of annual mean temperature and anomalies back to 1942.Using my Llansadwrn comparatively extended series of temperatures back to 1942, to calculate anomalies based on the 1991-2020 climatological average 10.3C. This year 2025 the annual mean 11.4C [+1.2] was highest on record ranking No. 1 (graphic left). The last four years have been exceptionally warm. Other notable years I remember well were 1949 with a mean of 10.6 [+0.3], and 1959, 1990 and 1997 with means of 10.7C [+0.4]. The last 37 years have seen 24 years with positive anomalies whereas the previous 47 years saw only 2. This is a clear indication of the effect of the change in climate heating we are experiencing.

Annual rainfall statistics at Llansadwrn 1929-2025. Rainfall for the year totalled 1183.9 mm, least since 2022, and (92%) & [103%] of averages. Water dynamics measured by lysimeter at Llansadwrn 2025. Soil moisture percentage under grass: © 2025 D.Perkins.Water dynamics (stylised graphic left) measured by lysimeter shows that during months March to April and July the PWB (potential water balance red line) was at or below zero . There were some very dry spells when soil moisture approached permanent wilting percentage under grass and particularly in the bare soil plot (graphic right). For much of the early part year from February to July accumulated rainfall was similar to 1945 the driest year on record in Llansadwrn. Soil moisture in May, July and August in bare soil was below permanent wilting percentage when shallow rooted plants died and garden vegetable plants needed irrigation. Deeper rooted shrubs showed some wilt whereas deeper rotted trees showed little wilting. The blue line showing PE (potential evapotranspiration) was greatest during May to August and was at a minimum in January to March and September to December. Most rainfall (brown line) occurred in June, September and November when the PWB was greatest.

Anglesey annual sunshine anomaly 1931-2025. Sunshine recorded at RAF Valley was the highest on record beating the previous highest recorded in 2010. The 2023 provisional 1763h (112%) & [119%] of average ranking highest on the Anglesey record (Kipp & Zonen adjusted values) since 1931. The sunniest month was May with 317h duration (139%) & [157%] of average The dullest month was October with 42h (44%) & [43%]. The sunniest day of the year was on the 11th June with 15.4h duration.
